Docusate sodium belongs to a group of medicines called emollient laxatives. It helps relieve constipation by allowing water to be absorbed in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass out.
Use this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not use more or less than instructed by your doctor.
Docusate sodium gel or liquid mini enemas are to be inserted into the rectum. Do not take it by mouth or use it in any other way. Try to go to the toilet before you insert the enema.
To use the gel or liquid mini enema, follow these steps:
- Wash your hands thoroughly.
- Remove the protective cap of the tube.
- Before insertion, lubricate the tip by gently squeezing the tube and smearing a drop of gel or liquid around the neck of the tube.
- If you are right-handed, lie on your left side and pull your right knee up to your chest.
- Gently insert the nozzle of the tube into the rectum.
- Squeeze the tube until it becomes empty.
- Keep the tube squeezed then slowly remove the nozzle from your rectum.
- Remain lying in this position for a few minutes before sitting or standing.
- Discard the tube after use.
The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition and response to the medication.
Use the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.
DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
- stomach pain that is not related to constipation
- nausea and vomiting
- intestinal obstruction (blocked bowel)
- rectocolitis (inflammation of the rectum or back passage)
- ileus (a condition where the bowel does not work properly)
- inflammation of the bowels
- bleeding from the anus
- haemorrhoids (swollen veins in the anus)
- anal fissure (tears or sores in the skin lining of the anus)
as Docusate sodium may not be suitable for you.
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Docusate sodium to a child.
Avoid long-term use of any laxatives.
Keep your appointments with your doctor. Your doctor needs to monitor your condition and check your response to the medication regularly. If you have certain problems with your rectum, a rectal examination may be done while you are being treated with this medicine.
What lifestyle changes can I make to prevent constipation?
You can adopt some of the following lifestyle changes to help prevent constipation:
- Include high-fibre foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole-grain cereals and bread in your diet. Add fibre to your diet gradually to help reduce gas and bloating.
- Drink plenty of liquids. Limit caffeine intake, which may worsen symptoms of constipation by causing dehydration.
- Be active and exercise regularly.
- Do not ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.
Docusate sodium may cause any of the following side effects: pain or burning sensation around the anus, rectal bleeding, and diarrhoea.
Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
Always notify your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking any other medicines, including herbal tonics such as traditional Chinese medicines, supplements and medicines that you buy without a prescription.
Avoid alcohol.
Store in a cool, dry place away from the reach of children.
Protect from light, heat and humidity.
Medicines must not be used past the expiry date.
